SKILLS AND CERTIFICATIONS
What I've learned in the field
WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER
WFA course run by Jill Baxter of Canadian Wilderness Medical Training. Course provided training to administer first aid in remote locations.
RAFT GUIDING
Paddle guide training on the Ottawa, Jacques Chartier, Rouge and Gatineau Rivers. Oar rig training on the Ottawa and Petawawa Rivers
SWIFT WATER RESCUE
CANOE
Paddle Canada Flatwater Tandem Canoe course run by Jill Baxter and Matt Cuccaro
KAYAK
Intro to whitewater kayaking on the Ottawa River as well as a 9 day sea kayak expedition on the Georgian Bay which resulted in achieving a Paddle Canada Sea Kayak certification
ROCK CLIMBING
In taking rock climbing courses both years with Greg Arminen, we became confidant with rope mangement, setting up anchors, belay techniques, and became an overall better climber
ROPE RESCUE
High Angle Rope rescue course run by Greg Arminen.
In which the class set up anchors on a train bridge and proceeded to rappell off the side of the bridge to preform pick off rescues and lower a " victim" in a sked to the ground.

ICE CLIMBING
Ice climbing (both first year and second) provided both an intro to the sport and deeper understanding of the risks and safety involved. Learned about ice and snow anchors as well as proper techinques, and safety.
SKI AND SNOWBOARD
Obtained both level 1 ski and snowboard certifications through CASI and CSIA
Trained at Mount Pakeham on how to properly ski and snowboard. As well as learned the proper progression of a beginner lesson for both ski and snowboarding lessons
SKI PATROL
Course run by Ski Patroller and paramedic Matt Hamilton
Practiced proper ski techniques and how to properly use ski patrol equipment including a ski patrol toboggan.
LEAVE NO TRACE
Over the course of ODA, the principles of LNT were a huge part of our learning. Was able to obtain a Master Educator qualification by the end of the program
MOUNTAIN RESCUE
Learned about avalanche safety, and avalanche safety equipment use. Used rope rescue knowledge to create a snow anchor and belay a "victim" down a steep terrain on a sked.
